DHAKA, Feb 27, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today convicted and sentenced Alpha Composite Towels Limited managing director (MD) Khwaja Soleman Anwar Chowdhury, its chairman Mrs Nowrin Habib and six others to 12 years imprisonment each in a case lodged over money laundering.
The court also fined the convicts, who are yet to be arrested, Taka 248.85 crore or to suffer one more year behind bars in default.
Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 pronounced the judgment and also issued arrest warrants against the fugitive convicts.
The other six convicts are- Safikul Anwar Chowdhury, Akbar Aziz Muttaki, Md Abul Hossain Chowdhury, Riaj Ahammed Uddin Shafi, Md Akter Hossain, and Md Mozammel Hossain. The court also ordered to confiscate all the movable and immovable properties of the convicts in favor of the state.
According to the case documents, Khwaja Soleman Anwar Chowdhury and other convicts amassed a total of Taka 132.77 crore from the funded and non-funded sectors. Chowdhury and his associates laundered 129.87 lakh USD against 132 LCs.
The ACC filed the case with Motijheel Police Station on November 3, 2013, and filed charge-sheet on June 17, 2015.
