Verdict on appeal against conviction of Giauddin Mamun set for March 6

DHAKA, Mar 4, 2025 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) has fixed March 6 for verdict on an appeal against the conviction of businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun in a money laundering case.

Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed today fixed the date after hearing on an appeal against his seven-year conviction in the case. 

Barrister Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain moved for businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun while senior lawyer Asif Hassan pleaded on behalf of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On October 26, 2009, the ACC filed a money laundering case against Giasuddin Al Mamun and it submitted a charge sheet on July 6, 2010 to the court accusing Giasuddin Al Mamun and Tarique Rahman.

The Third Special Judge Court of Dhaka on November 17 in 2013 in a judgment acquitted Tarique Rahman from the charge but awarded seven years imprisonment to Giasuddin Al Mamun. The court also fined Taka 40 crore and confiscated Taka 20,41,25,613 taking into state custody.

Later, the ACC filed an appeal before the High Court against the judgment. At the same time, Giasuddin Al Mamun also filed another appeal before the High Court. 

A High Court bench led by Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain after hearing both the appeals awarded seven years imprisonment to Tarique Rahman who was earlier acquitted from the trial court. They High Court also fined Tarique Rahman Taka 20 crore and upheld the conviction of Giasuddin Al Mamun.
