ACC files corruption cases against ex-state minister Faruk Chowdhury, wife

DHAKA, March 12, 2025 (BSS) -The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) today filed two separate cases against former state minister for industries Omar Faruk Chowdhury and his wife Nigar Sultana Chowdhury for amazing illegal wealth.

Omar Faruk Chowdhury was elected Member of Parliament (MP) from Rajshahi- 1 (Godagari-Tanor) constituency with an Awami League ticket.

ACC Director General (Prevention) Md Akhter Hossain disclosed the information to the media at a briefing at its headquarters.    

ACC Assistant Director Md Zinnatul Islam filed the cases with its Integrated District Office in Dhaka-1 following the approval of the commission, said the ACC DG.

According to the case statement, in the first case, Omar Faruk Chowdhury has been accused of acquiring assets worth about Taka 13,61 crore that is beyond his known sources of income, as well as engaging in unusual and suspicious transactions worth Taka 445, 23,74,039 in his 57 bank accounts.

The second case was filed against Nigar Sultana Chowdhury, wife of Omar Faruk Chowdhury, on charges of amassing illegal assets worth Taka 2,23,77,689 and suspicious transactions of Taka 4,35,10,843 through her 11 bank accounts.

The commission filed the cases against them under section 27(1) of the Anti- Corruption Commission Act-2004 and section 5(2) of the Corruption Prevention Act-1947. They also brought charges against them under sub-section 2 and 3 of section 4 of the Anti Money Laundering Act-2012.
