RANGPUR, Mar 16, 2025 (BSS) - Police today arrested Awami League leader Lipi Khan Bharasha, accused in an attempted murder case during the anti-discrimination student movement.

“She was arrested from Gulshan area in Dhaka city around 11:30 am on Sunday,” Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station Md Ataur Rahman confirmed the matter to BSS.

Lipi Khan Bharsha, also a prominent businessman, is accused of attempted murder in the anti-discrimination student movement march and she also allegedly provided funds to suppress the student-people movement.

She had last purchased a nomination paper to become an Awami League member of parliament on a reserved women's seat in the 2024 national elections.

She publicly participated in the election rallies of former Awami League lawmaker and Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi.

During the anti-discrimination student movement, the protesters took out a procession from the Grand Hotel intersection in the city in the afternoon of July 19 last year and took a position in front of Rangpur City Bazaar.

At that time, police and armed leaders and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies allegedly opened fire on the anti-discrimination student movement march with weapons. Many were injured in this incident.

Mamunur Rashid Mamun, who was shot in the incident on November 13 last year, filed a case of attempt to murder with the Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station.

Lipi Khan Bharsha is the accused number 179 in the case report. OC Ataur Rahman said,

“Lipi Khan Bharsha, the accused in the attempted murder case, was arrested from Gulshan in Dhaka around 11:30 am and taken to Gulshan Police Station.

“After completing the legal process, she is being brought to the Kotwali police station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police. We hope she will reach Rangpur soon,” the OC told BSS at 7:15 pm.
