RANGPUR, March 17, 2025 (BSS) - Businessperson Lipi Khan Bharasha has been sent to jail in an attempt to murder case linked to an attack on anti-discrimination student movement here in the city last year.

Judge Md. Soyebur Rahman of the Rangpur Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court-1 passed the order on Sunday night.

Lipi Khan, who had previously purchased an Awami League ticket with aspirations of holding a reserved women's seat in the 12th national election, was arrested earlier in the day at her flat in Dhaka's Gulshan-2.

Police from Kotwali Thana of Rangpur Metropolitan Police produced her before the court around 9:30pm under tight security.

During the court proceedings, her defense lawyers, Advocate Md. Jahurul Alam and Advocate Md. Ratuzzaman Ratul, sought her release on bail.

However, the court was urged by Police Sub-Inspector (CSI) Rafiqul Islam to deny her bail, citing the need for further investigation into the allegations of her involvement in the attack, financial support for the assault, and efforts to suppress the student movement.

After hearing the arguments, the court rejected the bail prayer and sent Lipi Khan to jail.

In the afternoon on July 19, 2024, when activists affiliated with the fallen Awami League and law enforcement allegedly attacked student protesters who were demonstrating against the quota system. The protesters had gathered in front of Rangpur City Bazar following a procession from the Grand Hotel intersection. Police were accused of firing at the protesters during the confrontation.

Mamunur Rashid Mamun, a victim of the attack, filed an attempt to murder case with the Kotwali Police Station on November 13, 2024. Lipi Khan Bharasha was named as one of the primary suspects in the case.
