DHAKA, March 18, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka Ahsania Mission has placed 9-point
recommendation to reduce road accidents during Eid journey including setting speed
limits for vehicles.
Ahsania Mission Youth Forum for Health and Wellbeing coordinator Marjana
Muntaha said these at a meeting with journalists at Dhaka Ahsania Mission Health
Sector in Shyamoli here.
She said most road crashes occur due to speeding so a safe speed must be set
considering road and vehicle conditions.
The recommendations include both motorcyclists and riders should ensure the use of
quality helmets, unfit vehicles should be banned from plying on the roads, drivers'
working hours must be ensured.
All types of battery-powered vehicles and vans, including locally made three-wheeler, four-wheeler called “Nachimon”, “Karimon”, “Tempu”, should be banned from
important roads and highways during the Eid journey.
Strict vigilance should be maintained to ensure that vehicles are not driven under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the use of seat belts by all passengers, including drivers, in vehicles during the Eid journey should be ensured.
Along with transportation, appropriate measures should be taken for pedestrian
crossing and their safe movement.
For example, sidewalks should be made hawker-free. Foot over-bridges should be
made pedestrian-friendly. Above all, a comprehensive road safety law should be
formulated and implemented based on the model of the globally acclaimed Safe
System Approach.
According to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), 320 people were
killed and 462 injured in 286 road accidents across the country in the 17 days before and after the holy Eid-ul-Fitr last year.
Therefore, the government is urged to implement the recommendations so that the
number of road crashes in the country, including during the Eid pilgrimage, can be
reduced.
On February 19, at the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held in
Marrakesh, Morocco, Bangladesh interim government’s adviser for Housing and
Public Works as well as Industries Adilur Rahman Khan promised to enact a road
safety law in Bangladesh by 2027 on the model of the Safe System Approach.
