BOGURA, March 24, 2025(BSS) - The Highway Police today arrested six people, including five members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP), on charge of kidnapping two freelancers from Dhunat upazila of the district.
A team of Kundarhat Highway Police Station arrested them after raiding different areas of Dhunat, Sherpur and Nandigram upazilas of the district.
The arrested persons are Sub-Inspector (SI) Shahin Mohammad Anu Islam, constables Ripon Miah, Abul Kalam Azad, Md Mahbub Alam and Md Bashir Ali and civil staff cum driver Md Mehedi Hassan. All the arrested persons are the members of the detective branch of the RMP.
Police also recovered Taka 2 lakh in cash, one walky-talky, one handcuff and seven mobile sets from their possessions.
Saidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhunat Police Station, said that the arrested persons personified themselves as DB officials and picked up Rabbi and Janahgir from Digalkandi village of the upazila at about 12.30am on Sunday. They alleged that Rabbi and Jahangir have been engaged in casino business and took them to Mirzapur area of the upazila, the OC said, adding that they also demanded Taka 12 lakh from the family members of Rabbi and Jahangir as ransom. The RMP DB team also threatened to kill Rabbi and Jahangir if their demands were not fulfilled immediately, the OC added.
The DB team first released abducted Jahangir from their captivity on that night taking Taka 2 lakh as ransom. The family members of Rabbi also paid Taka 1.30 lakh through bkash and he was also released from their custody. The family of Rabbi followed the microbus of the DB team and informed the matter to the Kundarhat Highway Police and the police later arrested them.
Monwaruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Kudarhat Highway Police Station, said, “After getting information and on the basis of the suspicious movement, we arrested six people including five DB officials of the RMP”.
A case was registered with Dhunat Police Station in this connection and the arrested people were sent to the court for further legal action.
