DHAKA, April 26, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has voiced its support for the Consensus Commission on several matters, including the recommendation for a bicameral parliament, as proposed by various reform commissions established during this interim government, said the party's Nayeb-e-Ameer, Dr Syed Abdullah Md Taher.
He said this at a brief press briefing today during an interval of their meeting with the National Consensus Commission here.
Taher said, "So far, the discussion on the constitution has been very fruitful. We have informed the commission of our agreement on the bicameral parliament and are now discussing its nature and structure."
Regarding the reform proposal concerning a four-year parliamentary term and the president's tenure, he noted that they had conveyed their support for a five-year tenure.
The Nayeb-e-Ameer added, "Discussions on these issues that are very important for the national interest will continue, because as a major stakeholder, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is considering the issues with great importance and attention."
He continued, "We are giving our opinion considering what is beneficial for the country and the nation. Here, individuals or parties are not our concern. Bangladesh, the people of this country and their future are important to us."
Earlier, at 10:30 am, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami started discussions on the recommendations of the reform commissions with the National Consensus Commission at the LD Hall of the National Parliament Building.
While delivering introductory speech on behalf of Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr Syed Abdullah Md Taher said, "We have gained a new freedom through the July-August uprising, but time will tell whether we have actually gained freedom."
He added, "We hope that this new change, this opportunity will not be lost again like in the past. That is why we have to be very careful, if necessary, we have to be a little strict."
Led by the party's Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, he went to Dhaka Medical College Hospital to see the injured and under treatment protesters after August 5.
Recounting the experience of that time, he said, "When we went there, we noticed that 80 percent of the sick and crippled patients were ordinary working people such as daily wage laborers, rickshaw pullers and street vendors. The outstanding contribution of the ordinary people in this movement cannot be forgotten in any way."
The meeting was presided over by Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the Consensus Commission. The members of the commission - Justice Md. Emdadul Haque, Badiul Alam Majumder, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Safar Raj Hossain and Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor (Consensus) Monir Haider were present.
On the other hand, the Jamaat delegation also included Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan, Central Executive Council Member and Dhaka City South Ameer Md. Nurul Islam Bulbul, Secretary of the Central Publicity and Media Advocate Matiur Rahman Akand, Dr Hamidur Rahman Azad, Central Executive Council Member Saiful Alam Khan Milon, Central Executive Council Member Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, and Lawyer Shishir Monir.
The discussions are underway based on the proposals made by the five reform commissions - Constitution, Public Administration, Judiciary, Anti-Corruption Commission and Elections.
