Court files ‘suo motu’ case for assaulting woman in Siddeshwari

DHAKA, April 29, 2025 (BSS) - A metropolitan magistrate court today filed a ‘suo-motu’ case for snatching bag and dragging a woman by a car in city’s Siddeshwari area recently.

Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) of Dhaka Kausar Parveen today received the case under the Code of Criminal Procedure (CCP) on the basis of a media report and instructed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to submit a report on the issue on July 20 next after detailed investigation.

The court after scrutinizing the media report in its observation said that the offence like dacoity, theft and grievous injury against the woman was committed by a group of people under section 392, 379, 325 and 34 of the CCP. 

The investigation into the matter should be done to ensure justice, the court observed and instructed the Superintendent of Police of the PBI, Dhaka City, to visit the place of occurrence, taking depositions of the victim and collection of evidences including video footage under section 173 of the CCP within July 20.        
        
According to the media report, on April 27, a gang of muggers ridding on a private car snatched away a bag of a woman and dragged her for few yards in broad day light while she was standing in front of green land tower at Siddeshwari area. The whole scene of the mugging was circulated through social media which created serious concern and reactions among the city dwellers. 

The incident was a cognizable offence under section 154 of the CCP and sections 243 and 244 of the Police Regulation Book (PRB)-1943 but the Thana police did not take any case in this regard so that the court took the suo motu case.
