MPA urges all to avoid negative publicity involving Mongla port

KHULNA, April 29, 2025 (BSS) – Mongla Port Authority (MPA) has urged all quarters concerned to work collectively for the development of the port avoiding internal conflicts and negative publicity involving the seaport for greater interest of the country.

Mentioning the internal conflict among Mongla Port workers, negative publicity in social media the MAP said it is not an organization of the port authority.

In a statement issued by Md Makruzzaman, Deputy Director of MPA, said in reality, it is an association operated by stevedore-controlled workers.

These workers perform loading and unloading operations for all commercial vessels arriving at the port, under the supervision of licensed stevedores, he said, adding that the stevedores are responsible for hiring, managing, and paying these workers. “The MPA does not hire or manage any workers directly,” he added.

The information available on social media regarding an alleged attack on labour leaders at the Mongla port is essentially a reflection of internal conflict among stevedore-controlled workers, according to the MPA statement.

Mongla port is the second largest seaport of Bangladesh.

Every year, around one thousand foreign commercial vessels arrive at this port.

Through loading and unloading operations, the port employs thousands of workers and supports various related industries, factories, EPZs, and millions of people involved in import-export activities.

This seaport continues to play a vital role in maintaining and advancing the country’s import-export activities and overall economic growth.

Internal conflicts among workers damage the port’s reputation both at home and abroad, said the MPA.

If such issues lead to a decrease in vessel traffic to Mongla port, thousands of dependent workers may become unemployed and face severe hardships, and the country’s economic progress could be hindered, it said.
