CHATTOGRAM, August 2, 2026 (BSS) - City Mayor Dr. Shahadat  Hossain today said the city corporation is prioritizing the development of well-planned infrastructure to transform Chattogram into a modern, secure, and traffic congestion free megacity.

Dr. Shahadat assessed a technical presentation as part of the feasibility study and strategic planning aimed at alleviating the growing traffic congestion in the port city and enhancing the communication system's quality.

A comprehensive presentation was made regarding the feasibility, technical specifications, costs, public service implications, and future benefits of the project titled 'Khulshi Railway Overpass Construction' during a meeting held at the Nagar Bhaban today.

Mayor Shahadat Hossain made the comments following the meeting. Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman and other engineers were present. During the meeting, the relevant engineers, an expert team from Delight Engineers and Consultants Ltd., and officials from the CCC provided an in-depth presentation on various technical aspects, implementation strategies, potential costs, and phased action plans for the project.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Mayor informed reporters that if this project is executed, it will be a significant advancement. The presentation indicated that the current state of the Dewanhat overpass, which is approximately 45 years old and was constructed between 1978 and 1980, poses safety risks (including concrete erosion, rod rust, and surface cracking).

It is particularly hazardous due to the daily passage of heavy containers and cargo trucks. Three alternative and retrofitting strategies were proposed to the CCC Mayor to address these issues. This approach will reinforce and modernize the existing infrastructure, leading to a 45 percent increase in the load capacity of the pillar without necessitating demolition.

Additionally, its lifespan will be extended by another 30 years at a minimal cost. Following the review, Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain directed the relevant parties to confirm the plan's implementation.
