RAJSHAHI, Aug 22, 2026 (BSS) - A grand volleyball tournament titled 'Bir Sreshtho Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir Volleyball Tournament' will be held in Rajshahi in November to pay tribute to the memory of Bir Sreshtho Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir, who made the supreme sacrifice during the Liberation War and to revive volleyball in the region.

Land Minister Mizanur Rahman Minu announced the tentative dates for the tournament as November 21-27 while speaking as the chief guest at a preparatory meeting at the conference room of Rajshahi Circuit House at 8 pm today.

He said top volleyball teams from across the country will take part in the men's division of the tournament. 

The participating teams are expected to include Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the Dhaka Premier League champions and the Rajshahi Divisional League champions.

A special women's match will also be organized between the Rajshahi District Women's Volleyball Team and the Bangladesh champion Police Women's Volleyball Team to promote women's volleyball in the region.

The minister said the tournament will initially be held at the grounds of different educational institutions in Rajshahi.

He said such sporting events can play an important role in building a healthy, clean and peaceful society by engaging young people in sports and keeping them away from drug addiction, gambling and immoral activities.

He also said an indoor stadium is currently being constructed under an initiative of Rajshahi City Corporation to promote volleyball and other sports in the city.

The minister said technical and finance committees will be formed to conduct the tournament smoothly. The estimated budget for the event has been set at Tk 12-14 lakh, which will be financed entirely through the organizers' own funds and corporate sponsorships.

He said no subscription or donation would be collected from the general public for the tournament.

RMP Commissioner Mohammad Faizul Kabir, Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam, former Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor Md Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, Zila Parishad Administrator Mohammad Ershad Ali Isha, local political leaders, players, coaches and other dignitaries were present at the meeting.
