DHAKA, Sept 11, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today ordered Rahat Hossain, 22, to be sent to jail in a case filed over allegations that he abetted his wife, Afra Khan, 16, to commit suicide in the DIT Plot area of Shyampur here.

Police produced Rahat before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court today after completion of his two-day remand.

The investigating officer then sought an order to keep him in jail until the investigation into the case is completed.
Following a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Siddiq Azad ordered that the accused be sent to jail.

Police arrested Rahat from his residence at DIT Plot in Shyampur on August 21. The other three accused in the case are Rahat’s mother Sonia Akter, father Liton Bepari and elder brother Saif Hossain.

Earlier, on September 8, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam had granted Rahat’s two days of remand.

According to the case statement, Rahat and Afra got married through a family-arranged marriage on May 8.

Since their marriage, Rahat allegedly used abusive and obscene language against Afra over various issues.
 
When she protested, she was allegedly beaten. She was also subjected to intimidation, threats, mental torture, humiliation and harassment, which left her mentally distressed.

On August 20, Afra's mother-in-law Sonia Akter called the victim's mother and informed her that Afra had fallen unconscious. Liton Bepari and Saif then took her to a local hospital in Sutrapur.

Afra's mother went to the hospital and noticed marks of injuries on her daughter's body. Afra was subsequently transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor declared her dead.

Following the incident, Afra's mother, Lucky Akter, filed a case with Shyampur Police Station on August 20 against four people, including Rahat.
