CHATTOGRAM, Sept 12, 2026 (BSS) – Authorities today asked railway engineers to intensify their works to fix inoperative train engines amid reports that locomotive crunch disrupted train and particularly freight services when the government announced plans to bring all 64 districts under rail networks

Railway officials said their eastern zone general manager issued the directive to quicken the engine repair works inspecting today the Chattogram Loco Shed, which is tasked for routine maintenance and light repairs of locomotive engines.

Bangladesh Railway’s (BR) Central Locomotive Factory called KELCO in Parabatipur of Dinajpur, however, is the premier institute that handles heavy repairs, overhauling, and rebuilding of locomotives.

The official also inspected Chattogram Railway Training Academy (RTA), the Container Company of Bangladesh (CCBL), and the Padma Oil Siding Line to assess railway operations and provided essential directives to the relevant officials to smoothen the train services.

Railways Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam last week told Parliament that his ministry took four initiatives to extend train networks to all the 64 administrative districts.

According to BR officials railway network now spans 3,428.09km of route and 4,826.097km of track while the government planned the new lines alongside procuring coaches and locomotives to ease the existing train services.
