Bangladesh emerge champions in women's doubles event in Junior Int'l Series

   DHAKA, Dec 15, 2022 (BSS) - Bangladesh emerged champions in women's doubles event of Yonex-Sunrise Bangladesh Junior Int'l Series that concludes today (Thursday) at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Indoor Stadium adjoining the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city, said a Bangladesh Badminton Federation (BBF) press release.

    The Bangladesh badminton team comprising Nasima Khatun and Smrity Rajbongshi pair won the women's doubles title defeating their compatriots Mathena Madhurjyo Biswas and SK. Prethat pair by 21-18, 10-21 and 21-15 points in the final.

    But, it was the Indian shuttlers who stole the day by winning the titles of remaining men's singles and doubles, women's singles and mixed doubles events.

    In the men's singles event, Gagan Balyan of India beat his compatriot Anishraj Rajkumar by 21-19, 21-18 points in the final.

    In the men's doubles event, Venkata Uneeth Krishna Bhimavarapu and Shashank Chhetri pair beat their compatriot Charan Ganesh Anupoju and Sri Mohith Kothapalli pair by 19-21, 21-15 and 21-14 points in the final.

    In the women's singles event, Surya Charisma Tamiri defeated her compatriot Navya Kanderi by 21-18 and 22-20 points in the final.

    In the mixed doubles event, Vignesh Thathineni and Rashmitha Donepudi pair beat Md Nazmul Islam Joy and Mst. Nasima Khatun pair of Bangladesh by 21-06 and 21-13 points in the final.

    State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam, MP, was the chief guest in the closing and prize distribution ceremony and distributed the prizes.

    BBF's president, Information Commissioner (Senior Secretary) Dr Abdul Malek presided over the closing and prize distribution ceremony.

    A total of 85 -- 53 of men's and 32 of women's -- players from four countries across the globe participated in the Int'l tournament which was held under the supervision of Badminton World Federation and Badminton Asia, the four-day meet is organized by BBF.

    Apart from host Bangladesh, three more countries - India, Canada and Sri Lanka - took part in the tournament.

    Earlier, the BBF organized Yonex-Sunrise Bangladesh Int'l challenge which was held from December 7-11 at the same venue.
