Rony returns Bangladesh T20 squad after 7 years

DHAKA, March 1, 2023 (BSS) - Rony Talukdar forced his way back to national team's T20 squad after seven years following a brilliant Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) outing.

Rony was the second highest run-getter in the last BPL with 425 runs for Rangpur Riders behind Najmul Hossain Shanto's 516 but what drew the attention was his strike rate, which is almost 130.

His ability to go after the bowlers' right from the start was something what Bangladesh T20 team has been searching for a long time.

In his only T20 game in 2015 against South Africa, he made 21 runs.

Thereafter he was called up in the 2016 T20 World Cup squad but didn't get the chance to play any match.

Alongside Rony, Shamim Patwari also made a comeback to the team after playing some good innings in the last BPL. Shamim was termed as future T20 star but lost his way somehow to squander his place from the national team.

The BCB selection panel led by Minhajul Abedin Nannu also called up three players-- Towhid Hridoy, pacer Rejaur Rahman Raja and left arm spinner Tanvir Islam who are yet to make their T20 international debut.

"All of those three new players have been in our radar for a long time. They have been doing consistently well to get a call up in squad," Abedin said here today.

"Rony deserved the chance after the way he played in the last BPL. Not only BPL, he also did well in the domestic circuit for some years now."
Towhid Hridoy also was called up for ODI squad due to his T20 exploit.

Rejaur Rahman Raja earlier was called up to Test squad but it was entirely new for Tanvir who got a call for the first time in any format of the cricket.

Tanvir's left-arm spin was key in helping Comilla Victorians secure the fourth BPL title.

Squad: Shakib Al Hasan (Captain), Liton Kumer Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Nasum Ahmed, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Shamim Hossain, Rony Talukdar, Towhid Hridoy, Rejaur Rahman Raja and Tanvir Islam.
