U19 WC winning players will create winning culture in the team: Shakib

DHAKA, Aug 26, 2023 (BSS)- Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has high hopes on the players, coming from the Under-19 World Cup winning team as he believes these players would create a winning culture in the team, which could lead them to win a major trophy in the multinational tournament.

As many as five players from the Under-19 World Cup winning team found their place in the senior team with Tanzim Hasan Sakib the latest inclusion.

Tanzim Sakib, a pacer bowler however, replaced injured Ebadot Hossain in the team while Tanzid Hasan Tamim, is waiting for his debut but the likes of Shoriful Islam, Shamim Patwari and Towhid Hridoy almost cemented their place.

"Since they won a World Cup, they have the winning mentality. I think their inclusion would motivate our team to achieve more and more," said Shakib in his first official press conference with the media after replacing Tamim Iqbal as ODI leader after the latter stepped down from the position recently.

"From what I have seen, the players, coming from U19 World Cup winning team want to win always. It's very important for a team. I hope they will keep that mentality up and help us to create a winning culture in the dressing room."

Shakib also separately singled out the name of Tanzid Hasan Tamim, an attacking opener who of late showed his prowess to score runs fluently.

"I am really hopeful about Tanzid Tamim. Not only me, the whole team is excited to have him in the team. I believe he has the talent to thrive in the International cricket," Shakib opined.

"But don't get upset if he fails to score in first three or four matches. Again it's not he will be good player overnight if he does well in his first three or four matches. I want him to enjoy his game and play the way he is used to play. I want him to enjoy the dressing room environment."

Shakib also said that they solely want to focus on Asia Cup and bring a good result as they want to get a boost ahead of the World Cup.

"You cannot think of World Cup with the Asia Cup because they are two different tournaments. Yes if we can do well and develop as a good team in Asia Cup, in that case we have some good chance to do well in the World Cup and from that point of view Asia Cup is important," he said.

"But it is not like if we do badly in Asia Cup will suggest that there is no chance for us in the World Cup or if we do great will mean that our chances in World Cup will increase substantially."

Shakib was happy with the way the Asia Cup preparation was done even though he was busy playing the Global T20 tournament and the Lanka Premier League (LPL).

He had a meeting with his teammates on August 24 for the first time after getting the leadership role.

However he said that he is not feeling that he has to make adjustment as the ODI skipper.

"Most of them played under me or I have played under them and played together. The one or two new cricketers who were included I think had good knowledge about me," he said.

"I don't think there is something like need for adjustments because everyone knows what their responsibility is. Because we have a cricket culture or trying to develop one so everyone knows what to do for the dressing room."
