Shakib back in Bangladesh to train under his BKSP coach

DHAKA, Oct 25, 2023 (BSS) - Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan all of a sudden returned to the country from Mumbai today when his side reached Kolkata for their next fixture against the Netherlands in the ICC Cricket World Cup.

After arriving in the country, he came to Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur where he was seen practicing under the guidance of Najmul Abedin Fahim, who was his coach in BKSP.

Shakib in fact sought Fahim's help when he found any technical fault in his batting or bowling. Shakib has been in a bad patch in the ongoing World Cup, be it in bowling or batting. His performance also put an adverse impact on the team, which now languished at the bottom of the table after losing four straight matches.

Bangladesh's only victory came against Afghanistan in their opening game of the showcase event.

Their latest 149-run defeat to South Africa yesterday in Mumbai saw them down to the bottom of the table based on net run rate.

Shakib who missed the match against India due to a thigh injury, scored just 56 runs in four matches with the highest 40 coming against New Zealand. He had so far taken six wickets at an economy rate of 5.54. Three of the six wickets came against Afghanistan.

In 2019 World Cup, Shakib made record after record in batting or bowling and ended the tournament with third highest 606 runs and 11 wickets. He was the only cricketer with 500 plus runs and 10 plus wickets in any edition of cricket's biggest extravaganza.

It is learnt Shakib will train with Fahim one day more before joining the team in Kolkata on October 27. Bangladesh will take on Netherlands in their sixth game of the World Cup at historical Eden Gardens on October 28. At this very venue, they will later face off Pakistan on October 31, before taking on Sri Lanka and Australia in Delhi and Pune on November 6 and 12 respectively.
