SOFIA, Oct 27, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - Mladen Krstajic has been sacked as coach of the Bulgarian men's team due to "unsatisfactory results", the national federation announced on Thursday.
Bulgaria sit rock bottom of Group G in the Euro-2024 qualifiers with just two points picked up in six games so far.
The Balkan country are without a win since November 2022 and during the last international break went down 2-0 to Lithuania and Albania, respectively.
"His contract, which was due to end in 2024, has been terminated," the federation said in a statement.
The 49-year-old former Serbian international is just the second foreigner to have coached Bulgaria, after German Lothar Matthaus held the reins in 2010-2011.
When Krstajic was appointed in July 2022, he pledged "to do his utmost to make the team stronger" whilst tempering expectations with the warning that he did "not have a magic wand".
The national side's next coach will be Bulgarian, and their identity will be unveiled on November 1, said technical director Ivan Ivanov.
