BPL franchisees looking to bolster squad with star foreign players

DHAKA, Feb 8, 2024 (BSS)- The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) would see some new foreign players in the coming days after SA T20 in South Africa and IL T20 in UAE as the franchisees look to confirm playoffs.

While some star players had already left the tournament for their national commitment, the franchisees had already spoken to a number of players to replace them.

Since a number of T20 leagues around the world are going on at this moment, most of the foreign players can't afford to play the tournament in permanent basis.

Also BPL has the rule to recruit players at any time of the tournament and so the franchisees could take the opportunity.

Since the Pakistani players had the NOC till February 7, the player like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Khushdil Shah, Aamer Jamal, Siam Ayub had already left BPL. Shoaib Malik will continue as he is not the contracted player of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The Sri Lankan and Afghanistan players also left the BPL as the two sides will meet in a bilateral series. But the Afghan players-Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Najibullah Zadran and Sri Lankan Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka will continue.

However the franchisees had recruited some other foreign players to replace those who left. Rangpur Riders will bring England's Dawid Malan, New Zealand's James Nisham and South African Dwaine Pretorious. Rassie Fon der Dussen was also supposed to join Rangpur but injury this time denied his participation in BPL. Rangpur will also bring Sri Lankan Wanindu Hasaranga and West Indies' Nicholas Pooran if they can move to playoffs.

Shai Hope and Oshane Thomas will return to BPL after the West Indies' series against Australia. Both of them will join Khulna Tigers in the Chattogram phase of BPL. Will Jacks had already joined Comilla Victorians which will be further bolstered by the arrival of Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and England's Moeen Ali. England opener Phil Salt had already joined Chattogram and the franchise will bring up West Indies' Romario Shepherd.

South African David Miller, popularly called Killer Miller is waiting to join Fortune Barishal. The franchise will also recruit his compatriot Quinton de Kock and Henrich Klassen. The franchise however also confirmed that West Indies pacer Obed McCoy will join the side tomorrow.

After the completion of South African T20 league SA T20 on February 10 and IL T20 in UAE on February, a good number of Proteas players and some quality foreign players will be seen in BPL, officials of BPL said.
