Sagor to carry national flag in Paris Olympics

DHAKA, July 18, 2024(BSS)–Archer Md Sagor Islam will carry the red green national flag in the march past of 33rd Olympic Games scheduled to be held from July 24 to August 11 in Paris.

This was disclosed by Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) Secretary General Syed Shahed Reza at a press conference held at BOA auditorium today (Thursday).

BOA Secretary General, about the selection of Sagor, said "as archer Sagar has directly qualified to play in the Olympics. That is why we have selected him to carry the flag."

Carrying the flag at an event like the Olympics is a great honor and Sagar also boosted by the honor after being directly qualified for the Olympics. BOA honored Sagar by giving him the opportunity to carry the flag.

Archer Sagar, was also present in the press conference, was found very excited. He said: “It’s a great honor to carry the flag of Bangladesh in the Olympics. Thanks to BOA for giving me this opportunity.”

Sagor will compete in the men’s individual ranking round on July 25, the day before the opening ceremony. If Sagar makes it to the ranking round in the men's individual event, his next round will be on July 30.

Chef de Mission Enthekhabul Hamid will lead the thirteen-member of Bangladesh contingent which included athletes, trainers and officials.

Five athletes from Bangladesh will take part in four disciplines -- archery, athletics, shooting and swimming -- in Paris Olympics. They are archer Sagor Islam, shooter Robiul Islam, swimmers Samiul Islam Rafi and Mst Sonia Khatun and sprinter Imranur Rahman.

Among the five athletes, Sagor Islam qualified directly on his merit while the remaining four were handed wild card entries.

The Bangladesh disciplines in Paris Olympic will begin on July 25 through archery event.  

The players and officials of Bangladesh archery and Bangladesh shooting team will leave for Paris on Saturday (July 20) while the players and officials of athletic and swimming teams will leave on July 23 and 24 in respectively.

Country’s fastest sprinter Imranur Rahman, who has been undergoing training under the supervision of coach Steven Howard Fudge, will directly join with the Bangladesh contingent in Paris from United Kingdom.  

BOA media committee’s chairman Sheikh Bashir Ahmed and Bangladesh Chef de Mission Enthekhabul Hamid were also present in the press conference.
