Tigers squander chance to put Pakistan at bay on Day 1

DHAKA, Aug 21, 2024 (BSS)- Bangladesh squandered a golden chance to keep Pakistan at bay on rain-hit Day 1 of the opening Test after bowlers gave them an early edge in Rawalpindi today.

Pace bowlers Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud struck early to leave Pakistan at precarious 16-3 after Najmul Hossain Shanto put the hosts to bat first.

However they recovered from the early setback to reach 158-4 at stumps as 41 overs were possible following a four hours delay of the game due to wet outfield.

Saud Shakeel was batting on 57 with Mohammad Rizwan on 24 when the bails were drawn. Saim Ayub was the other notable scorer with 56.

Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud picked up two wickets, giving away 30 and 33 runs.

Bangladesh pacers used the early moisture of the pitch well to leave Pakistan in embarrassing situation with Hasan Mahmud drawing the blood first.

He had opener Abdullah Shafique caught by Zakir Hasan in just fourth over of the game.

Shoriful Islam took the wicket of skipper Shan Masood who made just 6 before he got the dream scalp of Babar Azam, removing him for second-ball-duck.

But Pakistan hit back though Saim Ayub and Saud Shakeel who added 98 runs for the fourth wicket stand.

Hasan Mahmud broke through with the wicket of Saim Ayub who hit four fours and one six in his 98 ball-56.

But Shakeel and Rizwan kept the side unscathed through the stumps to deny Bangladesh taking full control.
