DHAKA, Oct 23, 2024 (BSS) - Bangladesh A came up with another poor show to suffer a 19-run defeat to Sri Lanka in their must-win game in the ACC Men's T20 Emerging Asia Cup at Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman yesterday night.
The second string Bangladesh set a goal to play the final, but the defeat led to their exit from the tournament even before reaching the semifinal.
Bangladesh A made a good start to the tournament, beating Hong Kong by five wickets but later tasted a four-wicket defeat to Afghanistan that made their game against Sri Lanka a 'do or die' game.
Electing to bat first, Sri Lanka put up 161-7 with Pavan Rathnayake making highest 42 off 26, hitting three fours and two sixes. Lahiru Udara made 21 ball-35 while Sahan Arachchige was the other notable scorer with 30 off 25.
For Bangladesh A, Ripon Mondal and Rejaur Rahman Raja claimed two wickets apiece.
Most of the batters of Bangladesh were either the current national players or played in the national team before. But even with them, the batting line up failed to make any impact as Bangladesh A were restricted to 142-7. Abu Haider Rony, who is not a solid batter, made team-highest 38 not out with one four and three sixes from 25 balls. Saif Hasan scored 29 while Parvez Hossain Emon made 10 ball-24.
Dushan Hemantha snapped up 3-23 to wreck havoc on Bangladesh batting and eventually was adjudged man of the match.
From Group A, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan made it to the semifinal.
