DHAKA, Oct 30, 2024 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Faruque Ahmed is keen to know why Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed his desire to quit from captaincy after the home series against South Africa.
Faruque said he will meet Shanto in Chattogram, the venue where the second and final Test between Bangladesh and South Africa is going on.
"I have to sit with him to know as to why he made such a decision. I will be flying to Chattogram tonight to meet with the team, coach and other and hopefully, there will be some outcome," Faruque told the reporters here today.
"I can't understand anything unless I discuss it with him. I can't take decision based on newspaper reports. Hopefully, everything will be clear after I personally sit with him. I need to know the reason behind this. As of now there hasn't been any conversation with him directly."
Though Shanto's captaincy has been praiseworthy, his lean patch with batting made him subject to huge criticism in the social media outlets.
Faruque said at this age of social media, the players need to be proactive in avoiding online backlash.
"Sometimes social media news can affect the players and they need to be more aware of this, whatever they feel about it.. I think there are a number of steps that could be taken, such as reaching out to cricket operations, the CEO, or the president," Faruque said.
The BCB boss also said that the players should discuss with the board before taking any decision.
"There are many easiest ways...you simply can say I don't want to do it, thank you and leave. But if there is underlying issue, it is imperative to talk," he said.
"If any player feels he can't continue, then that's a personal matter. If there's any such request, then we'll discuss it."
