Jaker misses ton as Bangladesh set Windies 287 for a victory

DHAKA, Dec 3, 2024 (BSS) - Jaker Ali Anik missed out his maiden ton but was key in leaving West Indies to chase a record 287-run target for a victory in the second and final Test at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica today.

The hosts however would have to break their own record for a victory as West Indies chased down 212 for a highest successful chase in the fourth innings in this ground in 2003.

In fact, only twice teams could chase 180 plus successfully in this ground.

However, Jaker struck his career-best 91 to help Bangladesh put up 268 in the second innings before being all out.

Bangladesh took 18 runs lead in the first innings after bowling out West Indies for 146, thanks to fast bowler Nahid Rana's maiden five-for (5 for 61 runs).

Resuming the day at 193-5, Bangladesh rode on Jaker's blitz to throw a challenging total to West Indies.

The home side, however, reached 23-1 at lunch on Day 4, still needing 264 runs for a series sweep. They won the first Test by 201 runs.

But Bangladesh were desperate for a series-leveling victory, which would give them third overseas victory in a calendar year. Bangladesh have never won three matches on overseas ground in its history in a year, with the highest two caming in 2009, thanks to win two-match series against West Indies.

Bangladesh received a setback early in the day when they lost overnight batter Taijul Islam and experienced campaigner Mominul in the consecutive two overs to be left to 211-7.

Mominul was dismissed for duck for second consecutive time in this Test that took his duck tally to 18, highest by any Bangladeshi batter.
Interestingly he has 13 centuries, also the highest by a Bangladeshi batter.

The lead was 222 at that moment but Jaker Ali came up with whirlwind batting, much to the dismay of the Caribbean bowlers to pace the innings.

He scored 53 off 33 balls off the last 57 runs made by Bangladeshi batters after the dismissal of Mominul.

Fast bowler Kemar Roach who was unable to bowl on Day 3 after being hit by a bouncer of Nahid Rana, took three of the five wickets on Day 4. He finished with 3-36 from 10 overs. Alzarri Joseph also ended with 3-77 while Shamar Joseph had figures of 2-80.

At the first interval of the day, captain Kraigg Brathwaite was in the crease with 16 after Taijul Islam reviewed successfully to remove Mikyle Louis for 6 on the stroke of lunch.
