NEW YORK, Dec 29, 2024 (BSS/TASS) - Russian chess grandmaster Volodar Murzin has won the FIDE World Rapid Championship 2024 in New York.
Murzin, 18, scored 10 points in 13 rounds. Russian player Alexander Grishchuk came second and Ian Nepomniachtchi, another Russian grandmaster, was third.
Norway's Magnus Carlsen, the winner of last year's championship, was earlier disqualified for breaching the dress code.
Russian and Belarusian chess players have been taking part in FIDE events as neutrals since February 2022 due to the situation in Ukraine.
