DHAKA, Jan 12, 2025 (BSS)—Parvez Hossain Emon’s ability to bat aggressively in the power play was the main reason for his inclusion in the Bangladesh’s Champion Trophy squad, said Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) selection panel chairman Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu.
“He (Emon) may not have huge contribution at this point. But what we think, what we are looking for... aggressive batting in the power play and that is in him. If someone else is needed to replace the likes of Soumya Sarkar and Tanzid Hasan Tamim, he will be the better choice for his ability to play at the high tempo,” he said.
Gazi Ashraf made the remarks while announcing the Champions Trophy squad at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today.
Emon was considered as the replacement of Liton Das who was dropped from the squad following a poor run of form. Emon though played seven T20 Internationals; he is yet to make his ODI debut.
“He plays aggressive cricket to win the game for the team. This is a big consideration. He may be able to contribute in the future. Therefore, he was taken in big tournament like Champions Trophy,” Ashraf added.
In 54 List ‘A’ matches, Emon has scored 1,852 runs at an average of over 35 and strike rate of 88.40. He hit one century and 11 half-centuries till date. He was also in the West Indies series but couldn’t make room in the playing XI.
“He didn’t play in any ODI in the West Indies. The selection committee usually does not interfere. The coach and captain take the main decision,” Ashraf said.
“Sometimes we go for discussions with a specific player. We are looking for someone who can match the aggression of Tanzid Tamim. So we are giving a chance to someone new."
If Emon is considered to play any game, Bangladesh will get all left-hand batters in the top four but Ashraf said it won’t be problematic if the players can stand tall.
"We focus on our own strengths rather than the opponent's advantages. The first three may be left-handed. Then right-handed. At one time, we played the first five left-handed batters in Tests. So, without thinking about others, our own strength is the main thing."
