DHAKA, April 10, 2025 (BSS)—Bangladesh Women’s team thrashed Thailand by 178 runs in a record-breaking effort to open their ICC ODI World Cup Qualifiers campaign in style at LCCA Ground in Lahore on Thursday.

This was the Tigresses’ biggest margin victory in their history, eclipsing their 154-run victory against Ireland last year in Mirpur.

Captain Nigar Sultana Joty led from the front by smashing her maiden WODI century — a rapid 101 off just 80 balls — which made her the fastest Bangladeshi batter to reach the milestone. Her innings broke the previous record set by Fargana Hoque Pinky, whose 156-ball century came against India in 2023.

Joty smote 15 fours and one six in her whirlwind knock.

Fargana contributed 53 in this match after opening the innings while Sharmin Akhter Supta missed out her ton by six runs after being unbeaten on 94.

Thanks to the trio’s blazing performance, Bangladesh compiled a hefty 271-3 in 50 overs, their highest ever total in WODI—going past the previous best of 252- 4, against Ireland in Mirpur.

Their indomitable batting performance was complemented by equally ruthless bowling from Fahima Khatun (5-21) and Janntual Ferdaus (5-7). Both of the spinners took five wickets apiece, which is the first instance of two bowlers from the same team picked up five-wicket haul.

Unable to deal with the duo, Thailand finally were wrapped up for just 93 in 28.5 overs.

The Tigresses will next take on Ireland at the Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday, emboldened by their record-breaking performance.
