BIRMINGHAM, (UK), July 29, 2022 (BSS)- Table Tennis team brought some comfort for Bangladesh as the Bangladesh men’s team comprising Hridoy and Ramhim pair beat their Fiji rivals by straight 3-0 set in their first doubles match of the 22nd Birmingham Commonwealth Games held today (Friday) at NEC Hall.
In the second and third matches of the singles event, Rifat Mahmud Sabbir and Hridoy won their respective matches.
If Bangladesh able to beat in their next match Guyana, then Bangladesh go to the quarterfinal.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Mohammad Zahid Ahsan Russel, MP, witnessed the Bangladesh matches.
On the her hand, New Zealand expatriate gymnast Ali Qauder Haque showed some light of hope to Bangladesh as he scored 13.3 out of 14 in his own event of the qualifying round. The other two gymnasts Sayed Ahmed Rafi and Shishir Ahmed could not fulfill the expectation.
Gymnast officials Habibur Rahman Jamil said that all the teams have been divided into three sub-divisions in the selection phase of gymnastics. Bangladesh is in sub division number one. Ali Quader competed in the vault and floor events. He was second in vault and third in floor.
Jamil said, 'Our target was to give the best. Hope something good will happen to us. Ali Quader has the potential to make it to the top eight. Everyone's main goal here is to go to the best eight.
Meanwhile, there was no good came news from swimming event as Bangladesh's swimmer Mahmudun Nabi Nahid finished eighth out of eighth in the 50m butterfly event held at Sandwell’s Aquatic Centre. Nahid, who was eliminated in the heat, will compete in the 100m butterfly event on August 1.
Besides, Maryam Akhtar finished fifth position among the seven participants in the women's 50m breaststroke event.
