CUMILLA, Dec 25, 2024 (BSS)-Mehedi Hasan Shuvo, a student of Comilla Polytechnic Institute, was injured in police firing in the Kotbari area of Comilla during the anti-discrimination student movement on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway On July 17.  

He still is carrying fifty sprinters of shrapnel in various parts of his body, including his head, chest, and two eyes.  After his severe injuries, Mehedi faces vision problems.   

In the past three months, several operations were performed for full recovery of Mehedi. However, he still faces vision problems after series of operations.  

His eyesight problem is gradually getting worse as he could not get better treatment due to severe financial hardship. 

Mehedi got financial assistances from his friends which is not enough to bear the treatment costs.  
 
In order to bear treatment costs, Mehedi's father had to sell the auto rickshaw, which was the family's only souce of income. 

Mehedi demanded government assistance to get his eyesight back as uncertainity continues to grow over his treatment. 

Mehedi Hasan Shuvo(18) is second among the four children of Liton Miah, a resident of Palpara village in Belghar North union of Lalmai upazila in Comilla. 

Among the four children of Liton Mia, Shuvo is only son and other three is daughters.

His mother is a homemaker (38).  

Mehedi also said, "At present, he is taking treatment under a specialist doctor at a private hospital in Dhaka. He has to come Dhaka for treatment purposes almost twice in a week". 

His HSC exam is knocking the door but still his vision is not clear. Even he cannot read the book clearly. 
It is difficult for his family to bear treatment cost.   

Mehedi’s father Liton Miah said, “For the sake of Mehidi’s treatment I have already sold my auto-rickshaw, only means of my earnings. With the money, I managed to run his treatment for only few days. However, After finishing all money got from the auto-rickshaw,  I had no choice but to depend on other for continuing treatment". 

Liton Mia is going through huge financial crisis to meet daily needs of his family alongside bearing treatment costs.
      
Liton Miah also said  “At the beginning, we received a certain amount of financial help from the students of polytechnic students and other people. Now my family is confined with the cycle of extreme financial hardship”   

He urged the government and affluent sections of people to extend their helping hands for supporting Mehedi's treatment.  

Regarding Mehedi’s treatment Liton Miah said they took him to different hospitals for a proper treatment. Finally he is now under the supervision of Dr. Siddiqur Rahman, an eye specialist of Vision Eye Hospital, green road.  

“The right eye may be damaged completely. Left eye may face similar condition, if proper treatments are not ensured,” he said. 
 
Mehedi’s uncle Hayatunnabi said, "From childhood Mehidi has been a bright student. He passed SSC obtaining GPA-5.00". 

Despite all the struggles, Liton Miah had a big dream about his son Mehedi's education. But irony of fate, Mehedi is losing eyesight as he joined the anti-discriminations student movement.   

Dream of Mehedi’s family is fading as they are gripped by fear of future of Mehedi.
    
Brave participation of many youths like Mehedi sparked the anti-discrimination student movement in all corners of country uniting all levels of people to make Bangladesh free from deep rooted fascism, said Abu Raihan, convener of the Comilla city  committee of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement.
