BHOLA, Feb 17, 2025 (BSS) – Thirty-year-old Md Mohiuddin Mohin returned home as a corpse on the day of his engagement.
Mohin embraced martyrdom in police firing during the July-August mass uprising that successfully ousted autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina ending her over 16-year rule.
Mohin, 30, son of late Hashim alias Kalu Boyati of Dakkhin Charpata village of ward number-8 of West Ilisha union under Bhola District Sadar, was the eighth among six brothers and three sisters.
Mohin's father died 10 years ago. His mother died in 2020, six years after his father's death. After losing both his parents, Mohiuddin started living with his elder sister Laiju Begum on Road No. 27 in Rupnagar Residential Area in capital's Mirpur.
He had been living with his sister for 16 to 17 years. He used to work at his brother-in-law Abdul Malek's grocery store. Although all his brothers and sisters got married, Mohin did not get married.
He planned to visit his village on August 8 and get engaged. The elder brothers at home had already chosen a beautiful bride for his marriage.
But everything was ruined, as the bullet shot by police took away the valuable life of their beloved brother Mohin during the student movement in August, 2024.
Recalling that fateful day, Mohin's bereaved sister Laiju Begum told BSS with a heart-wrenching cry, "I faint whenever I think of my brother's death. I have raised this brother with a lot of love and care for the past 16-17 years. I had many dreams and hopes centering my brother. All of a sudden, all my hopes have faded away."
On August 5, Mohin left home from Rupnagar residential area in the morning after breakfast and went to his workplace (at the store), she said with tearful eyes.
He returned home from the store around 12 noon and again left home around 1 pm, saying that he would have his lunch later at home, Laiju added.
He then went to Mirpur-2 with people to join the July-August student-people movement, she said.
"Around 4:30 pm (on August 5), the people with whom he went to the movement called me and said that Mohin had been shot in the chest during a clash between students and police in front of Mirpur-2 police station and is currently taking treatment at nearby private hospital,' she said bursting into tears.
"We quickly rushed to the hospital," she said in a sobbing tone, adding that after reaching the hospital, the doctors informed that the bullet pierced his esophagus and exited through his back.
Mohin was subsequently taken to Suhrawardy Hospital in the capital due to his deteriorating health condition, she said, adding that on August 5 night, he underwent a surgery.
Mohin was again shifted to another hospital named Shyamoli City Care Hospital due to crisis of getting 'Intensive care unit(ICU)', she said with a heavy heart.
"Mohin succumbed to his injuries there two days later at around 6 pm on August 8," she said in an emotion-chocked voice.
"We became perplexed with Mohin's critical condition prior to his death. We did not have enough money for bearing the medical expenses," grieving Farzana said.
"Despite having financial crisis, we spent about Taka 3.5 lakh in next three days since August 5. The ICU bill stood at Taka 1 lakh 90 thousand," she said.
The body of Mohin was taken from the hospital to his village home for burial after borrowing money from relatives, she said.
Shaheed Mohin's elder brother Alamgir said he was buried in the family graveyard of his village home after jummah prayers on the next day.
Alamgir demanded justice for his brother's murder as he was brutally killed in police firing during the movement.
Recalling Mohin's early life, Alamgir said that out of their six brothers and three sisters, Mohiuddin was the only one who passed the SSC and after that, he went to live with his sister Laiju in Dhaka.
"Due to poverty, he could not continue his education," he said, adding that all the brothers are poor in family.
"After our father’s death, we are earning our livelihood by doing whatever we can. The two younger brothers, Mohin and Manju, have made a house together in the village," Alamgir said.
He also said that Mohin used to help his elder brothers financially when he came home, he added.
"Mohin used to gift new clothes to his beloved brothers during Eid. His younger brother Manju got married, but Mohiuddin did not. Mohin's plan was to come home on August 8 and get married in December," he said, recalling Mohin's good old days.
Sister Laiju Begum said that they had received donations from the Bhola District Jamaat-e-Islami and the Bhola District Commissioner.
