JHALAKATHI, July 1, 2023 (BSS) - Five workers were burnt and four others went mission as a vessel 'Sagar Nandini 2' carrying 11 lakh litres of oil caught fire after an explosion in its engine room on Sugandha River in Jhalakathi today.
The incident took place on Sugandha river near Jhalakathi municipality this afternoon, said Jhalakathi thana officer-in-charge (OC) Nasir Uddin.
Fire fighters doused the fire in their one-hour efforts.
The four workers jumped into river after receiving burn injury and then workers of local trawlers rescued them sent them to hospital. Of the injured, two workers were admitted to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital and two others to Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital.
The OC said rescue vessel Nirbhik started journey towards the spot as Sagar Nandini 2 was capsizing gradually after its bottom got damaged.
The injured workers were Shakil, 35, Faridul Islam, 50, Iqbal Hossain, 27 and Mainul Islam Hridoy, 29. Cook of the vessel Belayet Hossain, 45, swam ashore after jumping into the river. Four others remain mission.
