Managing Director and Chief Editor's Profile
Abul Kalam Azad was appointed as Managing Director and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), the national news agency of the country, on February 3, 2014 for three years on a contractual basis with the rank and status of a secretary.
Prior to joining the national news agency, Azad worked as the Prime Minister's Press Secretary till February 2, 2014 from 2009. He also served as the Press Minister at Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, D.C.
On his return from Washington D.C. in 2002, he joined as the Press Secretary of Awami League President and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
In his student life, Azad was a member of the Central Executive Committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student front of Awami League. He was also Dhaka Divisional Treasurer of the All-Party Chhatra Sangram Parishad during the Mass Upsurge in 1969.
Azad began his career as a journalist with the Daily Ittefaq in 1973. He was President, Secretary General and Treasurer of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ). He also served as President and General Secretary of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ).
Azad was a member of the 5th Wage Board, constituted for announcing the wage award for journalists, employees and workers of the country's newspaper industry.
Besides being a member of the Dhaka University Syndicate and Senate, Azad was member of the Syndicate of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), member board of directors of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) and Press Council. He is also associated with many social and cultural organizations.
A former student of Dhaka University (DU), Azad also secured a diploma degree on "Advanced Journalism" from Moscow.
Azad is a member of the National Committee of Bangabandhu Parishad and President of Munshiganj District unit of the organisation.
